"Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen's silver-medal
performance at the All England Badminton Championships helped him break into
the top ten of the current BWF World Ranking on Tuesday. The 20-year-old from
Uttarakhand, who became only the fifth Indian to reach the All England Championships'
final, advanced two places to 74,786 points, overtaking reigning world champion
Loh Kean Yew of Singapore.
On Sunday, Sen lost a devastating four-game match to Olympic
champion and world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen of Denmark. As a result, the former
world junior number one Indian has surpassed Kidambi Srikanth, who has slid to
12th place this week.
Sen has pulled out of the Swiss Open owing to weariness
after reaching the finals of the German Open and the All England Open in the
previous two weeks. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand of the women's doubles
team surged 12 places to a career-high world number 34 after reaching the
semifinals of the All England Championship for the first time."
"In the quarterfinals, the couple surprised
second-seeded Koreans Lee Sohee and Shin Seungchan, who had been upgraded to
the main draw from the reserve list at Birmingham." Despite dropping a
position, Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy
retained India's best-ranked women's doubles duo at world number 20."
"After a second-round defeat at All England, double
Olympic medalist P V Sindhu remained at world number 7, while Saina climbed two
places to 23rd. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who won the men's
doubles title at the India Open in January, moved up to seventh place.
