The Madras High Court has reserved its decision on actor Vijay's petition.

On Monday, the Madras high court deferred its decision on a case filed by actor Vijay disputing a notice issued by the Commercial Taxes Department demanding around Rs. 8 lakh in entrance tax and a penalty of Rs. 30.23 lakh for importing a BMW X5 luxury car in 2005.

The court had previously ordered the Tamil Nadu sales tax officials not to take any coercive action against actor Vijay till February 1 for non-payment of a penalty for late entrance tax payment.

Despite paying the entry charge, the actor had petitioned the court to overturn the 400 percent penalty imposed for late payment of the tax. The plea was tagged to a batch of identical petitions filed by music composer Harris Jayaraj and a business group, and Justice C Saravanan gave the oral instruction.
