According to Medscape, researchers looked at 21 different studies in a review published in Nature Reviews: Endocrinology and determined that fasting is an effective approach to lose weight, "at least in the near term."

Results showed alternate-day fasting, time-restricted eating, and the 5:2 diet "can all produce a mild to moderate 3 percent to 8 percent weight loss during 8 to 12 weeks," according to the study, which focused on trials that lasted five to twelve weeks and included anywhere from 10 to 150 primarily American participants.

Trista Best, a Registered Dietitian at Balance One Supplements, Environmental Health Specialist, and Adjunct Nutrition Professor, tells Eat These, Not That!, "These findings are impressive, and I am delighted that research like this are being undertaken."

"The benefits of fasting go far beyond weight reduction," Best adds, "but these studies lay a fantastic platform for encouraging would-be fad dieters to participate in a safe and lasting method of weight loss."
